"What do you want to be true about your family SEVEN GENERATIONS FROM NOW?"

Ever thought about your family's legacy seven generations from now?

Most families operate with an unspoken code of conduct. We teach our kids the basics of right and wrong, but don’t think about much else.

When Pam and I attended a family legacy workshop, we were asked a question that really shifted our perspective:

"What do you want to be true about your family SEVEN GENERATIONS FROM NOW?"

This question forced us to think more intentionally about the impact our actions TODAY have on future generations.

So, after the workshop, we started:
>Sharing family stories from the past that shaped our family culture.
>Developing, communicating, and repeating our family's Mission, Vision, and Values.
>Setting long-term family goals that align with our values.
>Creating traditions that reinforce our family’s mission/vision/values.

Ours is a work in progress, but we left the workshop with a draft Mission, Vision, and Values and tools for communicating them to future generations.

Here’s an example of the core values we developed for our family, using the acronym TREES:
T - Thankful/Gratitude
R - Reconcile/Peace
E - Exalt God/Bless others
E - Enduring family
S - Serve generously

These values immediately provided a valuable framework for future decisions, areas of focus, impact, and what we see as important as a family, and as business owners..

So, I’ll ask you the same question: What do you want to be true about your family seven generations from now?

Start by defining your Mission, Vision, and Values.
