I almost Missed It!
No, I didn’t yell that out loud, but that’s what I was thinking when this picture was taken.
Ok, small confession. I’m terrified of heights! Even the thought of standing on the top rung of a 6-foot ladder gets my heart racing. So, when a group of friends invited me to go hiking in Zion National Park, I thought, "Nope! While that sounds fun, that is way outside of my comfort zone." Not only was the fear of heights a legit excuse, but the fact I had never been camping or hiking before was also a great reason to decline as well.
Then a bit of FOMO kicked in. What if I missed the chance to hang out with a great group of friends simply because I was afraid to face my fears? Although I still wasn’t completely convinced, I decided to take a chance and embark on the journey.
What happened was, I had one of the most incredible trips of my life.
Facing my fears resulted in deepened lifelong friendships, getting to see the beauty of Zion, the Arches, and Bryce Canyon.
It really was an amazing trip. And I would have missed it if I didn’t face my fears.
How does this apply in business?
Well, you can’t grow if you’re not willing to face your fears.
And if you own a business or lead a team, you’re faced with almost daily problems that can leave you feeling fear and uncertainty.
Or is it just me?
Here’s the thing though. Where I see leaders go wrong is they let fear determine their actions.
NEVER let fear make decisions for you. This leads to avoidance, putting off tasks, and stagnation.
Growth comes from facing our fears. And the more you do, the easier it gets.
Not because your fear goes away, but because you build confidence that you CAN.
Is there a time you were way out of your comfort zone, but you faced your fear?
