Donuts: $3.25 “Fish store”: Priceless
I had the chance to hang out with my granddaughter Bristol on a recent Saturday morning for a Papa date.
As we were leaving the donut shop, she asked, “Can we go to the fish store?”
I wasn’t entirely sure what she meant, so I gently brushed it off, thinking she’d move on to something else.
But she didn’t. She kept pointing across the highway to the big Bass Pro Shop.
Ah, the fish store! It all clicked. Turns out, she’d been there a few times with my son-in-law and knew exactly what she was asking for.

It got me thinking: how often do we unintentionally brush off a client request, a team member’s suggestion, or even a loved one’s ask because we don’t fully understand—or take the time to understand—what they’re trying to tell us?
I almost missed the opportunity to share a special moment with Bristol because I didn’t stop to figure out what she meant. And let me tell you, seeing the pure joy of a 3-year-old experiencing the “fish store” was absolutely worth it.
When things aren’t immediately clear, what are some ways you seek to understand the people around you? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
